안녕하세요! Hello!

안녕! Did you know what I just said? It is mean “Hello!” in Korean, and you might think the beginning is very familiar because it is similar when I start my French challenge. Anyway, today is the first day of my second half 30-day challenge, so I’m just going to teach you some of the basic greetings that Korean people will use in their daily life.

The first sentence I am going to teach is “Hello!”, but remember that in Korean society they will need to add polite word if you are older than them. That is something really need to notice when you speak Korean to a Korean people, because if you accidentally didn't or use polite words in the wrong situation. Those Korean people might think you are very rude or very respectfulness to them, so it is important to know when you should use polite word or not. Let us back to our topic, to say “Hello!” in Korean is “안녕!”(An-Nyeong). If we add polite word in it, it will then be “안녕하세요”(An-Nyeong-Ha-Se-Yo). From the word we can tell that they have similar word structure, but for the polite one it add three more words in it. Hello is not a hard sentence so let us continued the lesson!

The next sentence is “고마워!”(Go-Ma-Wo), which mean “Thank you!” in English. If we add polite words in it, it will be “감사합니다”(Gam-Sa-Hab-Ni-Da). For “Thank you!” it is different than the “Hello!” one, it didn't only add the polite word on it. The sentences have totally change into a different form. Anyway, as we all know that Korean people are very polite to each other. This mean it is necessary for us to say “Thank you!” to them all the time, no matter where you are. From my experience, I think learn how to say “Thank you!” in other language is very important, because even though we didn't have a really good English or one specific language. As long you know how to say “Thank you!”, most of the people won’t be mad at you and they might even help you! If you didn't say “Thank you!” after one person help you, they might just think this person is so rude that even didn't say “Thank you!" to me. Then he/she will told their friends, and more people will know that people from your country are not respect to other people. I believe that is something you don’t want to face when you travel to one country, so remember to learn how to say “Thank you!” before you travel!

I think it is enough for today, we have learn two different useful sentences for our daily life, include the polite way of speaking. For the next one I think we will go over some asking sentences, but I didn't decide what kind of sentences I will teach. Perhaps I will pick those sentences that appear in the Korean TV show very often. I don’t know, it is all depends on you guys. Remember to put comment below the blog, so I would able to know what kind of sentences you want to learn. See you next time! 안녕!

Korean~~~

Today is the start of the second half of my 30-day challenge, as what I said before, I am going to learn a new language beside English, French, and Mandarin. It is my pleasure to tell you we are going to learn Korean! As we all know that Korean are the second large population we have of the international students in Cheshire Academy. However, people in the world seems like not having a big favor of learning Korean. For me, I always think that Korean is a really interesting language, because how the words they form are similar to Mandarin. Meanwhile, it have totally different root compare to Mandarin, that is why I am so interested about learning Korean for my 30-day challenge!

Before we start the lesson today, I need to briefly talk about the grammar rule in Korean. For the characters of Korean, it is base on different kind of roots. This mean if you know how to read each roots in Korean, probably 99% of the words in Korean you will able to pronounce it. For the grammar it is basically same as Mandarin and English did, which is a subject, verb, and agreement. We can understand Korean as another type of English but with different format of vocabulary and character.

However, there is one special grammar rule we should notice about before we start to learn Korean. In their society, there must verify each other into different level. Such as the people who are older than you and people who are younger than you. Facing different level groups of people will need to say in different kind of way. Obviously we need to speak in polite way when we are talking to our elder, and for those people who are younger than us we can just say in normal way. (Didn't required to add polite way). The way how they verify each other in level are also interesting, we will usually think older age people will be the elder and younger age will be the normal one. From the information I got from my Korean friend, he said that in this school we don’t verify each other in age but in grade. This mean even though I am younger than you, but as long I am junior and you are a 10th grade, you still need to add polite word when you talk to me, which is only happen in our school.

Due to the time we have I think we are not going to learn some useful Korean sentences today, but at least we got to know some interesting facts about the Korean society and how it is work. If you are not a big fan of Korean, I will suggest you to stop that kind of thought and try to make yourself love it. For those who would like to learn Korean, I believe we will have a really good time together, because I’m not only to teach you some useful sentences in the daily life, but also some sentences that you will heard very often when you watch Korean show!

A bientôt!

Did you still remember that few weeks ago there was a college fair held in the campus. It was very important for junior because next year we will need to apply some colleges that we will want to go. However, one of the important part for the application is interview. Those college counselors will verify one person by the process of interview. If you did really well on the interview part, than those counselors might have a really good impression so that it will help you to get into that college easier. Anyway, did you know some useful sentences in French that can use during the interview? That me show you some really good sentences that you must learn if you want to go to study or work at France.

The first sentence is “Je m’appelle XX” (XX represent your name), which mean “My name is XX”. Telling the person your name is the first but the most important step for an interview. If they think the process of interview is very successful but they forget your name, it will cause all the works you do become nothing. I believe that this is something people didn't want to happen on themselves. This mean make sure to let the person knows what is your name, or I will say your are just wasting your time on an impossible interview.

After you know how to say “My name is XX”, you should also know how to say “What is your name?” as a basic respect to he/she. To say “What is your name?” in French is “ Comment tu t’appelles?”. Think about it, if you didn't know the person’s name who interview you it will be really hard for you to continued the interview. Not because you did really bad on it, but they will think you even didn't take this interview serious so you didn't know the name who interview you. Two tips that will help you when you are doing an interview are always mention the person your name and remember their name. If you could remember these two points when you are doing an interview, I believe the person who interview you will memorize you.

So far we have learn “Je m’appelle XX” and “Comment tu t’appelles?” which are both useful during an interview. The last sentence I am going to teach is “A bientôt!” which is mean “See you soon!” in English. This sentence could not only use in an interview, but also our daily life. Such as when we say goodbye to our friends, some people will say see you soon instead of goodbye. People think see you soon is better because saying goodbye might represent that this will be the last meet with you. Just like the new theme song in “Fast and Furious 7”- “See You Again!”. They are the same theory of what I just said. However, I hope you guys love my challenge so far, because this will be the end of the French part. For the up coming challenge, it will be learning how to speak Korean. A bientôt!

Goal for the coming up challenge

I think for the second half of my challenge I should do other languages besides French, because the original challenge is to learn different languages for one sentence each day. This is why right now I am looking for one of my friend that can speak other language beside Mandarin and French. For example, Korean and Japaness are always make me interesting. Especially the grammar rule in Korean and Japaness are also very different than any languages I learn so far. However, in order to reach this goal. Finding a students from Korea to teach me Korean is easy, but for Japaness is not easy because of the number of Japaness students we have in the school. That could be another factor for me to think about before I start my second half 30-day challenge.

Excited & Inspired

French on Friday!

Today is the April 25th of 2015, do you know what day is today? It is the most important day in my life because it is-Friday. At first you might think today is someone’s birthday or some kind of important festival, don’t you? Anyway, since we talk about birthday, do you want to learn some useful sentences to compliment the person? I am very sure the answer is yes so let us start!

If you want to say “Happy Birthday!" in French you should say “Bon anniversaire!”. As everyone knows that Birthday is one of the most important day for one person. It is not because people can only celebrate once in a year, but that represent you are getting one year older. I think there is nothing more important than become older. As one person getting older people will have more expectation on you because they think you are already grown up. You should be more self control on your own behavior, but correspondent, there will be less constraint on you. Such as driving a car, drinking beer, or having a credit card...etc. It is good to celebrate one person birthday, especially they can get blessing by their family and friends. That is why “Bon anniversaire!” is the sentence that you will definitely use in your daily life.

While we get blessing from other people, answer with basic respect to them is necessary, which is “Thank You.”-”Merci beavcoup.” This is also another very useful sentence in our life, just like “Bon jour” (Hello in English). I believe no matter which language we are study, know how to say “Thank you.” are usually teach in the first or second class. Then we can know that “Thank you.” is very important in all the language, because it represent the basic respect to other people. You will use “Thank you” in any places, such as at school, in a shop, or even in your house. From my own experience, learn how to say “Thank you” is very important. Especially when you travel to that country, and if you didn't know how to say “Thank you” in their language, those local people will treat you badly and think you are not respectful at all. This might cause you to lose your job or missing the biggest chance for your whole life. Don't miss the luck because of your own disrespectful!

For today we have learn two new sentences: “Bon anniversaire!” and ”Merci beavcoup.”. These two sentences you can use it immediately if your friends birthday is on today or someone just help you. Anyway, these two sentences can be use very often and always surround in your life. Although that memorize lots of SAT words or using prefect grammar is very important as a high school students if they are study in U.S., but if you didn't have the basic respect. No matter how high the SAT score is, no matter how good is your paper is. Nobody will accept your skill and let you go into their group, and this is same in other language too!

Best moment in your life!

As all the Cheshire Academy students know that we will have a head’s holiday on this coming Monday, and the reason why we will have that holiday is because of the up coming prom! Prom can be consider as one of the most important moment for students. People will invite their boy/girl friend or their close friends to go to prom and having fun over there. Interesting thing French is the represent of the romantic language in the world, so today I am going to teach you some sentences that you could use in the prom.

First sentence is “Je t’aime!”, which mean “I love you!” We all know that prom is the best place to tell somebody you love he/she or just for date. When it is the time where you are going to tell he/she your feeling, you can say “Je t’aime!” instead of “I love you!”. Think about it, when you hear your couple told you “I love you!” in French, doesn’t that will make you feel much more touching than any moment in your life? I believe for that answer will be yes, and you will love he/she more than before.

After you know how to say “I love you!" maybe I should teach you how to say its opposite sentence. “I don’t love you!” No, that is not the sentence I am going teach. The sentence I telling you is “Je te déteste!”, which mean “I hate you!” in English. WOW! now you might think why am I teaching this sentence right now? Didn’t I should teach some romantic sentences that can be use in the prom? My answer is yes and I think “I hate you!” can also be one of the sentence that could use in the prom. How so? If you are really unfortunately and you found out your boy/girl friend cheat on you, or your best friends betray you on something.(All the situation are not real, if it really happen this blogger have no responsibility to compensate) Then you decide to bring them to prom and end your relationship over there. “Je te déteste!” will be the best sentence to say, something good about saying “I hate you!” in French is they won’t able to understand what are you talking about unless they know how to speak French. This can not only help you to end your relationship in a fancy way, but also make yourselves looks high emotional quotient. However, I don’t really want you to end your relationship at prom, but this is just a backup plan and I don’t really want it happen.

Maybe we should just forget about what I said in the previous paragraph but the sentences we learn today: “Je t’aime!” and “Je te déteste!” Both of them are really usful in our life, especially when it relate to relationship. Don’t forget to tell your close friends “Je t’aime!” when you are at prom, also tell those people you don’t like “Je te déteste!”. (Just kidding)

Changes about Me

During the process of my 30-day challenge, I do have some changes happen on myself.

The first change I can think of is the enthusiasm about one activity. Before I started the 30-day challenge, I had never done this kind of long continuity activity. The longest one I had done before was only for one week, then I got tired about it pretty soon. The 30-day challenge really change my attitude on continuing doing one thing every single day. Especially because the challenge I am doing is something really interesting for me, so I would able to push myself to learn one sentence every day.

Beside I get more focus on continue doing one thing every day. My personality have also change because of the challenge. I used to be a person who was really easy to get distracted and not focus. Such as the homework that can be finish on one hour, for me it need to take two hours to finish. It is because I will get distracted by other things around me. However, because of the 30-day challenge, now I would able to become more focus on doing my work. Such as doing my homework, memorize SAT vocabulary, or working on my challenge...etc. I won't be distracted by my smartphone or fancy IPad when I was working, and that leads me to finish my work before study hall end.

Anyway, these two are the major changes I have so far, but who knows what else could be change during this 30-day challenge. Maybe will just like what I said in the previous blog post, you will see a different kind of "Gol'don"!

The most busiest month!

After few weeks, there are AP/IB exams coming up. For some people they might need to take SAT/TOFEL to prepare for their college application. Juniors are also start to ask their teacher to write recommendation letter for them. From those event we can guess that next month will be the most busiest for students. However, how is that matter to my 30-day challenge? The reason why I mentioned those event is because the sentences I learned have close relationship to them.

The first sentence is “Comment Çava?”, it’s mean “How are you?” No matter where did you lived in this world, “How are you?” will usually be the one of the first sentence to learn. Saying “How are you?” can be consider as the basic manner to other people, so that people will think this person is really kind and polite. Anyway, “Comment Çava?” is asking people in a more formal way. If you just want to ask your friends or in daily language way, you can just say “Çava”. It is mean “What’s up?” in English, which is less formal than “How are you?”. I think it is important for anyone who want to learn French to know this sentence, because learn how to say “Hi” to other people is the beginning of learning that language. This sentence will be use in the future very much, no matter you are talking to a professor or just your friends. Remember to say “Çava” to your French friends next time!

Next sentence for today is “Bon courage”, which mean “Cheer up” in English. This is the best sentence to say around during this time period because people having many tests and projects need to do. This might make some students feel tired about it, even more, having negative attitude all the time. If you have this type of friends around you right now, tell them “Bon courage” and everything will overcome. Beside “Bon courage”, you could also say “ Bonne chance” which mean “Good luck” in English. We will use “Bonne chance” before one person having their test or before present their project. In a conclude, both of these sentences have the meaning of encourage people, but one is more likely to use for having a test and another one is use for daily life encourage. Anyway, both sentences are very useful in our daily, and after today I hope everyone can say these two sentences very often in their life.

Today we learn: “Comment Çava?”, “Bon courage”, and “Bonne chance”. All of them are the basic greeting to other people, or encourage people to being possitive. Just like what I said in the beginning, these sentences are the best to learn during this time period. Due to many students having their AP/IB exams or SAT/TOFEL, people usually are very nervous and having a huge pressure among them. These sentences I just teach can make them less worry about the projects or tests that coming up, and their feeling might change from being negative into positive. Most important, they will be happy to having you saying during their tough time.

Bonjour!~ Je m'appelle Gordon

“Bonjour! Je m’appelle Gordon. Comment tu t’appelles?” Did you know what I have just said? That means “Hello! My name is Gordon. What is your name?” Today is just the 8th day of my 30-day challenge, and I already have the ability to introduce myself in French. I guess I am just really good at French!

Besides the basic introduction, I learned some sentences that were very useful for our daily lives. The first one is “C’est la vie”; We can understand this sentence as “That's life!” in English. My roommate told me that when your friend or someone who is in a bad mood or has an unlucky day, french people will say “C’est la vie” to them. This sentence not only could help them to calm down a little bit, but also it could be the most appropriate sentence to say when you are facing that kind of situation. Think about it, if one of your friend is in a bad mood and you didn't know the reason, can you say anything to comfort them? The answer is “No” because you don’t know what happened to them, so you have totally no idea how to start the conversation. I will suggest saying “C’est la vie” because it works all the time, and the person who you try to comfort will feel better. Look! You just learn how to speak French; Let's continue the lesson!

The next sentence is “Il est quelleheure?” It's mean “What time is it right now?” Although the meaning is "What time is it right now?" the way of sentence structure is very different. In the last blog post, I had mentioned that French grammar is very different than English. Every object has its own gender, so does time. If we translate “Il est quelleheure?” into English right away, it will become “He is which hour?” Didn't believe what I just said? What I just said is 100% true, and this is how French grammar works, believe or not. After we know how to say “What time is it?” we need to know how to answer back, don’t we? It is very easy to answer; We just need to say”Il est XX heure” (XX here represents the number). If we translate into English it will be “He is XX hour”. Kind of know how the French grammar works? I do, and sometime it is confusing, just like some grammar rules in English.

Today we learned three useful daily sentences in French: “C’est la vie”, “Il est quelleheure?”, and ”Il est XX heure”. All of them are very common sentences that people will use in their lives. Anyway, I can have a really short conversation with French people by using these sentences. Today is the 8th day, which means there are 22 more days to go. After this 30-day challenge, I can promise that you will have a new student in your class, and his name will be “Gol’don”!

2015年4月15日 星期三

Bon appetite!~~~

Today is the 6th day of my 30-days challenge, which mean I had already learn 6 common usage sentences in other languages.

Right now I had already learn some really usful daily sentences that could help me to do some easy conversation or just say Hello with my friends. Some of the sentences I learned was very interesting. One good example will be the sentence“Bon appetit”. The meaning of this sentence was to wish that person could enjoy their meal. The reason why I said was interesting was because recently we had watch a movie called “Julia and Julie”.It was a movie that take place in Frence so there were some French during some scenes .

In the movie, both main charactera really like to said “Bon appetit” before they cooked or ate their meal. Before I had learned thwas sentence, I was very confus about what were they talking about and what was the sentence mean. However, yesterday my roomate told me that it was a habit where before France people having their meal, they will often say “Bon appetit”. That really amazed me because I will never thought about some people will wish each other to have a good appetite before they eat. At least for me I never heard about thwas habit in United State or Taiwan.

Like I always believed “language was come from culture” People can learn one country culture by learning their official language. One interesting fact about French was the grammar they have. It was very unique and different than the Englwash we speak. In Englwash or Chinese, we won’t verify one object into any gender, because they are just non-living objects. In French, every single object have their own gender, and you must use the correct gender for the correct objects.

If you using the wrong gender, the French people might felt very strange or confus about what you are talking about. It was just like saying “I go to the movie theater.” We will never say something without a be verb, and gender is just like their be verb in the language. That was why learning a language was not difficult, but master one language was. There were still about 20 more days for my 30-days challenge. I am really confident about what I learn so far. I know how to speak, what is it mean, but not writing them down.

For the next 20 more days, I would like to focus more about the grammar part in French. Maybe try to do a short French conversation with my roomate to test how well am I using the French I learn. That is just one of the option. For another choice, I would like to learn another new language. I am thinking about learning Spanish, Korean, or Japanese. Those three are the languages that I really get interested about now. There are also have a lot of native Spanish and Korean speaker in our school, so it will be easier to just ask them to teach me. Anyway, that is just some idea for the other 15 days in my 30-days challenge. No matter what am I doing for my challenge, having perseverance will be the most important attitude for myself to complete the 30-days challenge.

The progress of my challenge

For my 30-days challenge, I will say it is going pretty well! The reason why I will say that is because my roommate-Fisher. My challenge is to learn new language in one sentence each day. Fortunately, my roommate knows how to speak French, which is something I never learn before. I ask him can he teach me one common French sentence that people will speak to each other for daily life. He agree immediately and teach me right away when I ask him.

Friday is the first day of the 30-days challenge, so he teach me three sentences to keep for Saturday and Sunday. He teach me how to say thank you, eat well, and everything will be good. I forget how to write these sentence but I do write those sentences down in my notebook. This will help me to memorize all of them and won't forget right after the day. Anyway, I'm glad to have the chance to do 30-days challenge so that I have the chance to learn a new language which I never try before. I can't wait to see how good am I after this 30-days challenge!

2015年4月12日 星期日

Purpose of 30-days challenge!

On last Friday, I started my own 30-days challenge. My 30-days challenge’s topic is learning new languages for one sentence.

One of the big reason why I choose this challenge is because I really like language. It is very interesting and such diverse in this world. Different countries have their own unique language, and none of them are same as each other. Although there are come from same region, but the language itself still have some places are different. For example English, there are two types of English that exist in the world right now. One is the American English, which is the English we speak most often. Another one is the Britain English, it is the English that speak in the United Kingdom now. Both are them are called English, but the grammar, spelling, and some vocabulary are very different than each other. Just like “I just had lunch” and “I've just had lunch” These two sentences having the same meaning but the way they say are different. There are more this kind of situation that happen at some place else beside United State and United Kingdom.

I believe that if one person can master on multi-languages their life would be more interesting. According to the Professor in linguistic “Language is come from culture.” Learning one language not only help you to have the ability to communicate with someone who speak that language, but also lead you to understand more about the history and culture of that language. Just like myself learning English. At first I think learning English is just waste of my time, I would rather do math than learning English. However, one day I meet my first native English speaker which is one my father’s friends. My father told him I learn English for a while so might have the ability to communicate with him, but I am so nervous that can not even speak one ward from my mouth. After that experience I found out that there are much more people like my father’s friend outside my country. I decide to take the advantage of learning English so that I will able to get one step closer to the world.

The last but not least reason I set this goal is because of my personal dream. One day in the future, I hope I can travel to everywhere I want and I can talk to the local people and make friend with them. I am not a person who good at social right now because of my poor English skill. Until now I still regret about why didn't I take the chance to learning English so my life will be much easier right now. Anyway, I should not care about the past but looking forward. Something I can do is to take the chance of the 30-days challenges, and push myself to learning new language instead of playing video. This is not only for the project that teacher gives me, but also prove myself that nothing is impossible.

Day 1, Let’s GO!

The goal for my challenge

For my 30-days challenge, I'm going to learn new language each day.

There are lots of languages exist in this world base on different culture. If one person know how to speak multi-languages, it is easier for them to communicate with other region people. I consider myself as a language lover, I think learning a new type of language is very interesting. Unfortunately, it is hard for me to learn multi-languages right now, because of my busy school works and some college stuff. One thing I can do is to learning one sentence each day, which is my goal for the 30-days challenge. No matter which language I learn, I will just learn one sentence each day. After 30 days, I will know 30 different kind of sentences in different language. This will make myself one step closer to my dream, which is master all the major language in the world.

3 things I want to subtract and add

Subtract
1. Sugar drinks
2. Stay up late until 12:00 or 1:00 in the morning
3. Computer time

Add
1. Exercise
2. Learning one sentence new languages
3. More vegetables in every meals

What is 30-days challenge?

Goal is one of the most common way for people to challenge themselves and see whether did they have any improvement or not. Sometimes when we set a goal to our-self, we didn't set a particular time to push our-self to complete it. This cause the time we spend on it is way more longer than it should be. Suddenly, one person jump out and said “We should do a 30-days challenge!” It is a challenge for one person to do in every single day in that 30 days. The goal should be easy to do, by easy I mean something that can be done for each day. Such as not watching TV, go exercise for 1 hour, take a photo each day...etc. This challenge not only can push someone continuously to do something, but also might let the person have a different view about his/her life!

My twist story - just a "normal" life

On Friday afternoon, Andy was sitting in the common room and watching TV. Soon, Jason came in and sat next to Andy.

He asked "How is your day, bro?"

Andy answered "Pretty good, I just finished my Chemistry test."
Jason "Really? Then you can enjoy your weekend I guess."
Andy "Yea, but I still have something need to do over the weekend."
Jason "Like?"
Andy "Some college stuff."

"Oh! Talk about college, how is your application going on?"

"Well, I don't really want to talk about college right now."
Jason remember yesterday was the day that the result for college early decision came out. Then from Andy's face he can feel a touch of sadness. He thoughts maybe Andy didn't accept by his dream college, and that was the reasson why he didn't want to talk about it.
Jason said “It will be fine, everything will overcome.”

Andy ”I know, but I just don’t know why it will happen."

"Well, it is just an early decision, nothing matter about it. By the way, it doesn't mean you didn't have any chances."

"I know, but I’m sure I check everything before I send my application. Everything should be perfect, but….”

“Well, you can’t change anything right now, I suggest you to look forward. When God closes a door, he always opens a window.”

“I think you are right, I shouldn't keep being negative.”

"Yea, this is the real Andy I know."

"Thank you Jason, you did help me a lot."

"No problem, this is my job for being your friends. Anyway, I didn't accept by my Dream college too."

"You didn't get accept in?"

Jason asked confusly ”Wait, didn't you say you get reject?”

"Who told you that, I got accept by Boston University. They just want me to send a new photo to them in order to make my student ID card, because last one I sent was awfal and they want me to give them before the end of today."

After Jason heard that, he went back to his room and felt very disappointed rest of the day.

Change in third revision

In my third revision, I change my conclusion and some of my body paragraph. First is my conclusion, the conclusion I had before seems like a little weak and didn't leave with a really good ending. That is why I change my structure in my conclusion in order to make it become stronger and let the reader restate the position.(remind what is my position.)
Beside my conclusion, I also change some part of my body paragraph. I fix every last sentences in each of my body paragraphs, and make sure that is did relate to the thesis at the end. However, i didn't think my sentences is strong enought. Perhaps I need more suggestion form my classmates or my teacher. It is hard for me to know what else could I change in my essay. If it is read by someone else, it will be easier for them to point of the problems I have in my essay.
